I got into a discussion with a good Christian friend of mine by asking what he thought about poverty. In Shane Claiborn's book Irresistable Revolution, his stance is that Jesus said that there will be always be poor around us because Jesus knew the selfishness of our hearts. He believes that if we did what Jesus said to do...

Matthew 19:21
Jesus answered him, If you would be perfect, go and sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; and come, be My disciple.

...then there would not be poor around us. My friend responded with, "But why then did Jesus say that there would always be poor around us?

Matthew 26:11 For you always have the poor among you, but you will not always have Me.

And the OT say that the poor would never cease?"

Deuteronomy 15:11 For the poor will never cease out of the land; therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hands to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor in your land.

What do you think?

I agree that there will always be poor among us. Not everyone is willing to give up all their comforts and wealth to help out the needy. Sure they might give some, but not enough to the point where they will have to depend on God to help provide for them.

I think there are people on the streets who choose to be there. Not the majority of course but I believe some people prefer the streets to a comfortable life. Therefore they will always be needy in those regards.

If all the rich and wealthy people of the world all of a sudden became christians and decided to share their wealth and follow the teachings of the bible, the world would be a different place for sure. However I think it would be too little too late.

I believe even the richest person can be poor. What good is money if you have nobody to share it with or spend it on. Yes, there will always be poor among us.
