I grew up in Southern California, a child of non believers. Somehow, on my own, I began to engulf myself in community service. In California, there is never a problem finding ways to help those in need. Now I live in a rural Illinois town. I go to College, and still find it difficult to find ways to help those in need. I have gone to several different churches, most which help others simply by praying. Where are those in need? I know they are here, but it does not appear as though people want it known. Finally a flyer in a new church I visited this weekend lead me to a domestic violence shelter, which in turn led me to the one homeless shelter that is full, and people are being turned a way. My heart sank. I will be volunteering at the domestic shelter, however I feel the need to advocate for more homeless shelters etc. People ARE in need here but there is no loud message telling people that people need help, need resources, need US. It is like a secret world that is very hard to find and even more difficult to help. A lot of red tape. I would love ideas, comments, words of wisdom, anything to get my minding wheeling towards a solution, if not just a step forward for those in need in rural areas. My mother was homeless for 20 years. In one of the richest countries in the world, there is no reason we should have so many without a safe place to rest.
