Hi, I am in the middle of reading the book now. I live in downtown Baltimore and help out twice a week with a food drive providing sack lunches to the homeless in the city. This is a fairly need area of ministry for me. I have formed relationships with some of the regulars and Id say that about 40% of the people I meet have some sort of mental illness.

I know Christ came for the sick, but I have never really thought about how Christ specifically reaches the mentally ill. I truly believe God is filled with mercy, compassion, and grace and agree that "all of God's children are broken beggars at the foot of the cross in need of mending." Many of their mental illnesses come from some sort of substance abuse that was a free choice on the part of the user. What does that mean for a mentally ill person who may have denied Christ before they became ill and now are unable to control there minds and free will to accept Christ? I was hoping you could give me your thoughts or advice about topic and ministering to these folks.

I also pass at least 1-2 homeless individuals a day and find it hard to give them money every time. I have not yet finished to book, but what is your advice on interacting with these people (especially the mentally ill ones) when I cannot give them money.
